Student Leadership Opportunities at Woodhey High School

Woodhey High School is a community in which students are fully integrated in student leadership roles that support the work of the school and the wider community, whilst at the same time developing their leadership skills and preparing them for the next stage of their education, training or employment.
Students will develop leadership skills through a variety of opportunities which impact positively within school on teaching, learning and well-being for both students and staff, as well contributing to our local community.

Edward

My name is Edward, and I’m proud to serve as a Senior Ambassador at #TeamWoodhey.

I wanted to become a Senior Ambassador because I am passionate about creating a positive learning environment and making life at school better for students, teachers, and faculty members alike. Senior Ambassadors are in a perfect position to improve school in both the short and long term, and I am confident that my contribution to Woodhey will benefit current and future members of our school community.

In this role, I hope to make an impact by offering more opportunities outside the classroom while maintaining academic standards. I’m a strong advocate for extracurricular activities, as they provide students with valuable qualities like determination, perseverance, and teamwork. I believe a healthy balance between a traditional education and enrichment opportunities is crucial for maximising each student’s full potential. By expanding the diversity of options available outside lessons, we can ensure that every student has something that appeals to them.

A fun fact about me is that I have a black belt in karate, a sport I began at age five. I achieved my black belt at 12 and spent a lot of time during the pandemic working towards this goal. Karate gave me something to focus on while everything else came to a standstill. In my free time, I enjoy all forms of sport—particularly football, cricket, and cross-country running.

Meredith

Hi, my name is Meredith and I am proud to serve as a Senior Ambassador at #TeamWoodhey.

I wanted to become a Senior Ambassador to support others during their time at school and to be an effective link between the students and the staff.

In this role, I hope to make an impact by focusing on revision. Not knowing how to revise is a problem I’ve faced at times, and it can make preparing for exams incredibly stressful and overwhelming. I’ve realised that much of that stress comes from simply not knowing where to start. I’d like to tackle this by informing students about the variety of techniques and strategies available—from visual aids and practice papers to time management tools and more—and help individuals figure out which approaches work best for them. Learning is different for everyone, and finding the right method can make a huge difference not just in results, but in overall confidence.

A fun fact about me is that I’m a member of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets, where I’ve taken part in a wide range of activities including gliding, shooting, fieldcraft, and drumming in a marching band. In my free time, I enjoy watching Formula One and other branches of motorsport, and I hope to pursue a career in engineering one day.

Lucy

Hi! My name is Lucy, and I am proud to be one of your new Senior Ambassadors for the upcoming academic year at #TeamWoodhey.

I wanted to become a Senior Ambassador to support younger students who may be finding it hard to settle in and to ensure that everyone feels safe and like they belong.

In this role, I hope to make an impact by promoting wellbeing. Building a positive attitude in students from the beginning of their school journey is just as important as supporting those who may be struggling with their mental health. I’d love to help through enrichment activities such as wellbeing workshops, learning new skills, and even taking a break to connect with nature.

A fun fact about me is that I’ve been performing since the age of five and once performed on stage to an audience of over 1,400 at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London’s West End. This was an amazing opportunity that really boosted my confidence and gave me insight into my future, as I aspire to become a performer. In my free time, I volunteer at the Friends of Nuttall Park café, which has helped me improve my communication skills and gain valuable experience for future jobs.

Summer

Hi, I'm Summer, and it is my absolute privilege to represent Woodhey High School and every student as your Senior Ambassador.

I wanted to become a Senior Ambassador because I am a hardworking and dependable member of the school community. I’m passionate about Special Educational Needs, inclusion, and wellbeing—topics close to my heart based on my personal experiences. I'm also deeply committed to mental health and ensuring that every student is heard and feels safe to express themselves without fear of judgment. I have high aspirations for everyone to reach their full potential, and I hope that every student in our school feels valued, included, and represented.

In this role, I hope to make an impact by being a safe, approachable person who can bridge the gap between students and staff. Please feel free to speak to me about any problems or challenges you’re facing—I’ll always make time to listen and offer support or share ideas that could help improve everyone’s school experience.

An interesting fact about me is that I’m a young carer. This has helped me develop empathy, patience, and resilience, as I’ve learnt to handle difficult situations with care and maturity. Being a young carer has made me more independent and adaptable, but also very aware of the importance of emotional wellbeing. It’s taught me to value kindness and empathy, especially during tough times.

I’m really excited to hear your ideas and work alongside you to make Woodhey High School an even better place for everyone to thrive this year.

Jack

Hi, my name is Jack and I'm proud to be serving as a Senior Ambassador at #TeamWoodhey.

I wanted to become a Senior Ambassador because I’ve only been at the school since the start of Year 10, and since then, my studies, grades, and attitude towards learning have improved massively thanks to the incredible work of the Woodhey staff. I want to give back to the school in any way I can.

In my role, I hope to make an impact through fundraising—similar to the events that took place at Christmas to help improve school facilities. For example, new shelters for winter so students can still enjoy time outside even when it’s raining, and a new garden area for Curriculum Support.

An interesting fact about me is that I’m sporty and a team leader. Outside school, I’ve played football at district level, competing against teams from the USA, and I used to play for Salford Roosters, a rugby league team coached by the ex-CEO of the Salford Red Devils. I currently play rugby union for Sedgley Park Tigers in Whitefield, where I’ve played for two seasons and built strong relationships with other rugby organisations. I also play cricket for Edgworth Cricket Club in the U15s and Men’s 3rds and 4ths teams, and I’ve been part of two league-winning sides as well as the T20 Summer Cup Champions last season!

Other Leadership Opportunities

Members of the Year 11 Ambassadors team apply through completing an application form and undertaking a formal interview process. Senior Ambassadors lead in the selection process for Year 11 Ambassadors. Successful applicants must demonstrate exemplary behaviour and model the school core values of respect and excellence to their peers.  Student leaders undergo leadership training, support at key events such as Open Evenings and have additional school duties.

School Council

The student council strengthens our community and promotes the fundamental British values of democracy, rule of law, liberty, respect and tolerance. Students are encouraged to make strategic decisions, communicate and collaborate effectively and use their voices to create societal change. School Council members will be mentored on their strategy and leadership skills and will be encouraged to document their leadership journeys through completing reflective journals as council representatives.

Global Learning Ambassadors

Global Learning Ambassadors are students who show a flair, apparent 'natural ability' and/or commitment to Global Learning subjects. These are Geography, History, Religious Education and Sociology. They are those who are likely to read around the subject and find opportunities to learn about elements of the subject independently. They also contribute by participating in activities such as open evenings, transition days, student voice, assemblies and interview panels.

Sports Leaders

These students will be selected by the Performance Faculty based on effort, participation and commitment to sport. Sports Leaders will assist members of the PE team through a range of ways including notifying their peers of sports fixtures, organising and officiating house competitions, leading warm ups and cool downs during lessons as well as the promotion of enrichment opportunities available to students within the PE department.

Charity Leaders

All students have opportunities to raise money for charity through a variety of activities. Students in all year groups have been responsible for organising events, which have raised thousands of pounds to support worthy causes.
Events have included bake-sales, costume competitions, non-uniform days and an annual Sponsored Walk. In December 2023, students in every year group organised and contributed to Woodhey High School's Charity and Community Week, raising money for several local charities. Students plan and promote the events throughout the school community, raising awareness as well as money for the charities they have selected and researched themselves.
