As part of Woodhey’s Personal Development Offer, The Pledge, 35 of our students took part in an exciting STEM enrichment trip to the East Lancashire Railway to visit the Inspiration 200 Exhibition Train — a unique travelling exhibition celebrating 200 years of the modern railway.

The visit offered an immersive learning experience as students moved from carriage to carriage, exploring the fascinating history of the railways and discovering how transport has evolved over two centuries. Along the way, they completed interactive challenges focused on modern railway systems, sustainability, engineering solutions and digital technology. These hands-on activities encouraged teamwork, problem-solving and critical thinking, helping students see how STEM subjects connect directly to real-world industries.

A key highlight of the day was the opportunity to learn about future careers in the rail and transport sector. Students explored a wide range of roles, from engineering and data analysis to environmental planning and customer operations, broadening their understanding of the many pathways available within this fast-moving industry.

Following the exhibition train experience, students visited the Bury Transport Museum, where they deepened their knowledge of local transport history. They enjoyed engaging with a wide range of historic vehicles, including trains, buses and fire engines, bringing learning to life and sparking curiosity about technological progress across generations.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Dave Savage, Community Rail Officer for Community Rail Lancashire Ltd, whose support helped make this trip such a memorable and inspiring experience for our students.
