We have had an amazing week at Space camp with 5 students in year 7. They attended UCLAN university campus and participated in a variety of activities, starting off with trying on a space suit and art design, using black holes as their inspiration.
We also got to look at their telescopes, including one that was made in the 1800s as well as comparing it to their new modern day equipment. We also got to view a selection of the images they have taken at the observatory. Everything from planets, nebulae, distance stars, galaxies and even black holes.
We had a trip out to an observatory during the week. The students had a talk about exoplanets as well as a virtual star gazing experience that saw the night sky (as it would be in real time) projected on to the roof of the building. They also got to use some software that allows them to compare luminosity of interstellar objects to compare them for size and distance from us.
Not only did they learn about space, but the experience of being in a university setting was inspiring and aspirational, along with talks about the recruitment process for an astronaut and all the other careers that the National Space Academy offer. The students were a credit to the school, with staff commenting on how great they looked in their Woodhey Space camp hoodies!
