As part of our ongoing Personal Development Programme, The Pledge, Woodhey High School was proud to welcome Rachael Dodgson, Senior Education and Engagement Officer for the UK Parliament. Rachael delivered an engaging and impartial assembly to our students, focused on British Values, Democracy, and the importance of political engagement.

The session provided students with a valuable insight into how the UK’s democratic system works, including how elections are held, the role of Members of Parliament (MPs), and how laws are created and passed. Rachael also highlighted the significance of having a voice in society and explained how young people can get involved—encouraging those with a passion for change to consider opportunities such as becoming a Youth MP.

One of the highlights of the session was the opportunity for students to handle real ‘bills’ from the House of Commons and the House of Lords. This hands-on experience helped bring the legislative process to life and deepened students’ understanding of how decisions are made in Parliament.

The assembly was both educational and inspiring, raising awareness of UK politics in an accessible and engaging way. It encouraged students to think critically about their rights and responsibilities as future voters and citizens.

We thank Rachael and the UK Parliament’s Education and Engagement Team for their visit and for supporting our commitment to empowering students through The Pledge.
