One of our two key values at #TeamWoodhey, is Respect. To us, Respect means treating others as you wish to be treated.

Our team is not just school, it is our wider community. Treating others how we wish to be treated applies to everyone within our community, and to do this, we have to learn about, and respect the past to help us to inform our future.

This year, students have been recognising Remembrance in a variety of ways, to allow them to acknowledge the service and sacrifice of others and learn about the importance of tolerance. Students have been supporting the Royal British Legion by selling poppies and other Remembrance items at Morrison’s in Ramsbottom. Throughout the week, students not only raised money for a great cause, but heard stories from members of the community who had served themselves, or who have family members who served their country. Students heard tales of commitment, meeting the Queen, and even from an author about his memories of service.

Oliver and Maisie represented #TeamWoodhey at the Remembrance parade in Ramsbottom on Remembrance Sunday, laying a wreath on behalf of everyone at school, before a perfectly observed two minutes’ silence took place on Monday, Remembrance Day. Students who are members of the cadets wore their uniforms, and Freddie played the Last Post beautifully during the silence.

Not only a fitting way to recognise those who have served, but an important opportunity to learn about respect, tolerance and peace.

‘They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.’
