This week, some of our Year 9 girls participated in an immersive experience, learning about engineering and the careers available to them.

The WEC Engineering workshop provided an engaging and hands-on learning experience for students, blending technology, creativity, and practical skills. The workshop featured a valuable talk on apprenticeships in engineering. Industry professionals shared insights into the benefits of pursuing an apprenticeship as a pathway to a career in engineering. They discussed the importance of gaining practical, on-the-job experience, the skills apprentices can acquire, and the opportunities for career advancement

They then followed with a with a guided tour of the workshop, where students were introduced to various engineering tools and equipment, gaining insight into the professional environment. This was followed by a unique virtual reality (VR) experience, where students had the opportunity to try welding in a simulated environment. The VR setup allowed them to practice welding techniques without the need for actual equipment, making it a safe and interactive learning tool.

The highlight of the workshop was a creative twist on traditional welding: students engaged in a fun and unconventional activity—welding chocolate! This light-hearted activity encouraged teamwork and precision, while also causing competition on which chocolate structure can hold the most weight.
