Woodhey High School Tackles Bullying with Powerful Assembly and PHSE Lessons

At Woodhey High School, students from Year 7 to Year 11 have been deeply engaged in learning about the critical issue of bullying through their PHSE education and a profoundly moving assembly.

This initiative was part of the students' community responsibility within the school’s PLEDGE, embodying one of the school’s core values: Respect.

The activities aligned with Anti-Bullying Week 2024 and its theme, Choose Respect. Through PHSE lessons, students explored:
•    What constitutes bullying: A detailed understanding of harmful behaviours and how they manifest.
•    Types of bullying: Including physical, verbal, emotional, and cyberbullying.
•    Primary and secondary victims: Recognising the ripple effects of bullying beyond the targeted individual.
•    The bystander effect: Understanding how inaction can enable bullying and how to overcome it.
•    Strategies to address bullying: Practical guidance on safely intervening and seeking help.

The highlight of the program was a powerful assembly led by David Foster from Stand Against Violence on Monday, 18th November. Stand Against Violence works tirelessly to educate young people about the dangers of violence and promote positive decision-making to reduce harm in communities.

During the assembly, students heard the heart-wrenching story of Amber, a young girl whose experiences of relentless bullying led her to take her own life. Delivered with sensitivity and respect, Amber’s story served as a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked bullying. Students were urged to reflect on their own actions, the importance of speaking up, and their role in building a respectful and inclusive school environment.

Through these lessons and the assembly, students gained valuable insights into the human impact of bullying and the collective responsibility to stand against it. By participating in this initiative, they have been empowered to become proactive changemakers, ensuring that respect, kindness, and support define their school community.
