At Woodhey High School, our Community and Charity Week has been a shining example of what can be achieved when compassion, teamwork, and determination come together. As part of our Personal Development Pledge, students, staff, and families united to support local charities and raise awareness for important causes, making it a truly memorable week.
Throughout the week, students collected and donated a wide range of essential items for several local charities, including:
• Ramsbottom Pantry – providing vital food supplies to families in need.
• Red Door Homeless Project – supporting individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
• SAFENET – offering refuge and assistance for those affected by domestic abuse.
• Hewlett Court Residential Home – enriching the lives of elderly residents.
• Bury Hospice – providing care and comfort for people with life-limiting illnesses.
The generosity of our school community was incredible. Our Senior Ambassadors played an essential role in the initiative, sorting and delivering the donations to the charities. During their visits, they heard firsthand how the items would be used to support people in need, making the experience both educational and heartwarming.
In addition to the donation drive, PHSE lessons focused on raising awareness about Diabetes, helping students learn about the condition and how it affects people's daily lives. On Friday, Year 7 students were privileged to hear from William Case, a representative of the charity Your Support Matters. William shared his inspiring story of living with cerebral palsy, shedding light on the challenges he has faced, including being a victim of 'mate crime.' His powerful talk was a reminder of the importance of inclusion, kindness, and standing up against discrimination. Students also managed to raise over £400 to Save the Children during the annual Christmas Jumper Day.
The week ended on a high note with our Annual Charity Fayre in the Frank Bennett Hall. Students from all year groups came together to organise and run a variety of exciting stalls and activities. Highlights included:
• Guess the number of sweets in the jar
• Name the teddy bear competition
• A hilarious teacher karaoke contest
• "Throw the sponge" at brave staff volunteers
The Fayre was a huge success, raising additional funds for Cancer Research UK while providing a fun and lively atmosphere for students and staff alike.
Mr Downing (Assistant Headteacher - Personal Development) said:
